Our Clinicians
Dr Dermot Hurly
TĀKUTA - GENERAL PRACTITIONER
I’m a GP here at Waiheke Medical Centre, and what I love most about my role is the opportunity to really get to know the people I treat. Building those genuine connections is at the heart of what I do, and I feel lucky to be part of such a friendly, inclusive team that balances a high level of professionalism with a truly welcoming atmosphere. When I’m not in the clinic, I’m usually making the most of the island life, either exploring the local walking trails or spending time in the garden.
In my clinical practice, I have a dedicated interest in supporting patients through complex chronic conditions. I provide specialised care for those navigating Long Covid, ME/CFS, POTS, and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, alongside other related conditions. I am passionate about working closely with my patients to manage these intricate health journeys with both expertise and empathy.
Dr Margaret Karetai
TĀKUTA - GENERAL PRACTITIONER
I’ve had the privilege of serving this community for 40 years, having co-founded Waiheke Medical Centre alongside my husband to create the practice it is today. As a General Practitioner, I’ve developed a deep clinical focus on women’s health, gynecology, and children’s health, with a particular interest in hormonal wellness. For me, the heart of this clinic is the team; I love working in an environment that is genuinely kind, supportive, and free of competition where we truly look out for one another.
When I’m not in the clinic, I’m a passionate gardener and sewist, and I stay busy keeping up with my thirteen grandkids and my very well-deserving retired dog.
Dr David Hay
TĀKUTA - GENERAL PRACTITIONER
I am a General Practitioner at Waiheke Medical Centre, and I when it comes to my work I would say that I'm an "old-fashioned" generalist, working alongside all areas of general practice. My role is centered on providing comprehensive care across the full spectrum of general practice, and what I enjoy most is the simple, rewarding experience of seeing my patients and getting to know our community. I feel incredibly lucky to be part of such a great, supportive team that makes providing this care a pleasure every day.
Outside of the clinic, I make the most of island life by getting out on the water for a sail or staying active with plenty of walking. During the summer, you’ll usually find me taking a swim whenever I can. I’m a believer in the classic mantra that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, and I aim to bring that same straightforward, health-focused energy to all my general practice consultations.
Dr Sheryl Howarth

Outside of work, I am a proud parent of six children—four biological and two stepchildren—who keep me busy with their diverse activities. My personal experiences have strengthened my understanding of family dynamics and the importance of balancing health and wellness in everyday life.
I am excited to be part of the practice and look forward to supporting patients and whānau with compassionate, comprehensive care.

There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing the positive impact our work has on the overall wellbeing of our island population. I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of such a wonderful team; we truly support one another, which creates a fantastic environment where we can provide excellent care for our patients.
Life outside the clinic is just as vibrant, as I’m kept very busy with my four children. We are currently navigating a full house with one at university, one in high school, and my little twins whom I homeschool. We absolutely love living on Waiheke, especially spending time down at Whakanewha or anywhere we can gather with our friends.

MĀTANGA TAPUHI - NURSE PRACTITIONER INTERN
I’ve been nursing for 15 years, with the last eight spent right here on Waiheke across all three local practices. Many of you might recognize me from the Acute Walk-in Clinic, but my background is quite diverse, ranging from serving as a medic in the New Zealand Army to working as a safety advisor in the oil and gas industry. I’m currently completing my Nurse Practitioner Internship with the incredible support of both Waiheke Medical and Piritahi Hau Ora, a role that allows me to provide thorough 30-minute assessments alongside my GP mentors to ensure everyone in our community gets the high-quality care they need.
There is a lot of hard work and plenty of laughs that go into caring for our community, and I love being part of a team that stays steady when things get acute. When I’m not at the clinic, I’m navigating life in a tiny container home with my daughter and a lively crew of two dogs and two rescue cats who definitely run the show. I’m a big believer in Newton’s Law of Inertia as a health tip: if we want something to change, we often have to be the ones to take that first step and create the momentum.

NĒHI - NURSE PRESCRIBER
Kia ora! Having grown up on Waiheke and attended our local schools, I feel a deep connection to this community. I’ve been a Registered Nurse for 12 years, spending the first half of my career in the Auckland Emergency Department before transitioning to primary healthcare in 2020. My time in emergency nursing taught me the vital importance of early intervention, which inspired me to complete my Master’s degree and become a Nurse Prescriber. I’m now working toward my Nurse Practitioner internship to further improve healthcare access and equity for our whānau.
I love the fast-paced, diverse nature of working across Piritahi Hau Ora and Waiheke Medical Centre—no two days are the same, and our supportive team makes it a joy to provide the best care possible. Outside of work, my life is full of adventures with my two young boys, aged two and four. In the clinic, I’m available for a wide range of appointments, including post-hospital discharge appointments, sexual health and contraception, asthma and hypertension reviews, and management of acute concerns such as infections, allergies, or skin conditions.

HIP
About Me:
My role at the Waiheke Medical Centre is as its new Health Improvement Practitioner! I’ve had experience working in mental health in South Auckland with all ages and diagnoses, alongside the simple struggles that life throws at us. My role as a HIP will be to have brief discussions with anyone seeking mental health support of any kind and help them figure out strategies we can use to improve their situation!
Why I Love Working Here:
As someone who is still relatively new to the island, I have to say that what I love most about working here is the feeling of everyone, both inside and outside of work, being one big whanau. I’ve felt so welcomed by everyone, patients and coworkers alike, and it’s made me feel like I’ve been here forever!
Fun Fact / Outside of Work:
A couple of hobbies I have outside of work are boxing and Dungeons and Dragons. I’m hoping to find people on the island who are interested in joining me with both! As a child, I spent two years living on a boat, so living on an island where the ocean is no more than a five-minute drive away is nothing short of a dream come true for me!
Favourite Quote / Health Tip:
“This too shall pass”. No matter how rubbish the current situation you’re in is, there will be an end to it, just like there was for all past rubbish situations you may have been in.

PRACTICE COORDINATOR
About Me:
I have a background in education and hospitality, and some of you may recognise me from my years working on reception at Waiheke Medical Centre. I grew up on the west coast of Ireland and, after spending many years working across Europe, I met my wife, who is a Waiheke local. We relocated to the island in 2012, and since then, Waiheke has truly become home. I enjoy being part of such a connected community
Specialities / Why I Love Working Here:
As Practice Coordinator at Waiheke Medical Centre, I help support the day-to-day running of the practice and work closely with our team to ensure patients receive the best possible care and experience. My role involves coordinating services, supporting staff, and helping create efficient systems that allow our clinical teams to focus on what matters most: caring for our community. I enjoy the variety each day brings and being part of a team that is dedicated to making a positive difference for the people of Waiheke.
Fun Fact / Outside of Work:
Outside of work, I love spending quality time with my family and making the most of island life by exploring Waiheke whenever I can. I’m also a huge food lover and enjoy cooking, trying new recipes, and experimenting in the kitchen.
Favourite Quote / Health Tip:
Looking after your health is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself and your whānau.

KAIĀWHINA WHAKAHAERE - ADMIN ASSISTANT
My role is Administration Support.
I joined Waiheke Medical in 2025 and immediately felt welcomed by such a special whānau. The teams at both Waiheke Medical and Piritahi Hau Ora are fun, supportive, and incredibly hardworking. Working alongside colleagues who genuinely put patient's health and wellbeing first is what makes me love what I do, and being able to support that work behind the scenes brings me joy every day.
Outside of work, life keeps me busy with my three beautiful children. I feel incredibly blessed to live on Waiheke Island and be able to spend quality time with my whānau and friends who mean the world to me. In my spare time I enjoy trying my hand at golf, cooking good food and beach days in Summer.
“Be kind to yourself, be kind to others, and laugh every day — we are truly blessed.”
Jude Williams
Keeping the energy high and daily operations running smoothly across both our Waiheke and Piritahi clinics is what I do best. As the Reception Lead, I’m all about ensuring our teams are synced up, and our patients feel supported from the moment they walk through the door. For me, health isn’t just about the physical; it’s a holistic "big picture" that includes the mind and soul, too!
I’m lucky enough to work with a crew of genuinely cool, fun people who make every shift a pleasure. When I’m not at the front desk, you’ll likely find me tending to my ever-growing collection of houseplants.
Cadence Anderson
I work across the front desk and call centre, supporting patients with bookings, check-ins, and the daily administrative tasks that help the clinic run smoothly. I enjoy creating a welcoming environment and always aim to make sure every patient feels comfortable and well looked after from the moment they arrive. Being part of such a supportive team is a highlight for me, and I love having the opportunity to help our community every day.
Outside of the clinic, I’m usually found out on the moana, exploring Aotearoa on road trips, or heading along to festivals. I’m a bit of an adrenaline junkie and always keen to try something new, though I always return to the whakataukī: “He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata” reminding me that people are truly the most important thing in the world.
Vicki Tataurangi
AWHI ORA SUPPORT WORKER
I began my journey in healthcare at the front desk of Waiheke Medical Centre before moving to Piritahi Hau Ora, an experience that gave me a deep understanding of how our clinics connect with the community. Today, I balance my time between reception and my role as an Awhi Ora Support Worker, where I provide person-centred support for those facing challenges in their daily lives. Whether I’m assisting with bookings or helping someone access social services and personal development goals, I love being part of a team that ensures everyone feels heard and connected to the right resources.
I am a firm believer in the whakataukī, “Mā ngā mahi iti ka tutuki ngā mea nui”—through small actions, great things are achieved. This philosophy guides how I work alongside individuals, at their own pace, to improve their overall wellbeing and help them navigate community support services. When I’m off the clock, I’m all about making the most of island life and spending quality time with my whānau.
